When creating Wheelhouse Health Navigation, the goal was to provide people with access and aid in all things healthcare. This in itself is a loaded task because access to healthcare is not just a single entity but many puzzle pieces which all have to fit together. This can be challenging, as a single misunderstanding or misinterpretation in the complex pathway to care can prevent the care from being delivered.
At Wheelhouse, we aimed to create a place where every step is covered—not just who to call for a medical or dental appointment, but also who to contact for transportation, language barriers, finding a job, and more. We also understand that barriers exist beyond and before that first call to a doctor’s office. Questions arise regarding how to follow an automated phone menu, how to set up your phone's voicemail, and what to do when it comes time to make a payment. These are just a few small things that can hinder one's ability to get the care they need.
We also understand the power of a community fueled by passion to help one another. Providence has so many fantastic resources that provide support in so many areas related to health and healthcare. For this reason we have created a community resource page located on the website! This page showcases the extensive range of resources available both generally, and specific to Rhode Island. The guide is organized based on what questions you might have, with clear information like our partners’ websites, location, and contact information to allow users to be self-sufficient in accessing their care.
The page is not yet finished and we have so many goals for it! We are hoping to create step by step solutions for common issues we see people have while navigating the healthcare system, and establish it as a guide that can be shared and used over and over again.
Our resource page is linked on our website under the “about us” tab. Our page is a work in progress and open to suggestions or questions. Feel free to email or message us with questions and suggestions to make our page more well rounded and helpful. Healthcare is a collaborative space and we hope to be well connected with the resources available in our community-so please be part of the equation! Keep an eye on our website for ongoing blog posts featuring community health leaders and special events!
